A man killed when a tree fell on a car at Mount Buller has been identified as musician Talae Rodden.

Mr Rodden died at the scene on Monday. He was a passenger in a car driven by his mother on Mount Buller Road when a tree fell on the vehicle.

His mother was taken to hospital with serious upper body injuries.

Mr Rodden is being remembered as a talented musician and part of a family that is "deeply ingrained in life at Mount Buller", according to an online fundraiser.

He was a budding musician with a solo musical project called RiceWine.

He is survived by his mother, Sally, father Cha and brother Jared.

The family managed lodges on the mountain and ran retail shops in Mansfield and nearby Merrijig where they live.

"At this incredibly difficult time, we want Sally, Cha and Jared to know that they are not alone," the fundraising page reads.

Mansfield Shire Council Mayor Steve Rabie said Mr Rodden's death would be felt across the shire for some time.

"Mansfield is a small and very close-knit community," Cr Rabie said.

"When something like this happens, the impact reaches well beyond those immediately involved and I know many people across our community have been deeply affected by this news.

"Our thoughts are with the family and as a community, we stand with them."

Police said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death remained ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
