Tropical Cyclone Narelle has hit Far North Queensland, with residents in the region taking shelter from intense winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Christie Johnson said the storm reached speeds of 195km/h as it made landfall, but has now dropped to sustained winds of 165km/h.
"There are still wind gusts up to about 230km/h," Ms Johnson said.
Ahead of the storm, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli warned residents in the region to brace for "significant" damage.
