Residents from Ipswich to Brisbane and surrounding suburbs have reported large hailstones and damaging winds following a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of south-east Queensland.
The weather bureau had earlier warned residents in south-eastern areas to prepare for destructive winds, heavy rainfall and potentially giant hailstones.
Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said storm activity was expected to continue for the rest of the day.
"At the moment we may see these storms impacting areas around Brisbane, the Gold Coast, pushing back across the Lockyer Valley and into the sort of Western Downs as well," Ms Bradbury said.
"These storms are moving east, but may potentially produce some severe weather through those south-eastern areas over the coming hours.
"There is a risk of storms continuing into tomorrow for the far south-east too, but the risk of severe storms is shifting further north
"If we see any severe storms in the Brisbane area, it's going to be across the northern suburbs and likely more isolated than today."
Ms Bradbury said the storm activity was likely being triggered by a weak trough moving through that created an unstable and moist environment.
The BOM is forecasting scattered showers and thunderstorms across many parts of eastern Queensland, with a low-pressure trough likely to deepen.
