Storm clean-up underway

NSW was battered by storms overnight, causing property damage and leaving thousands of people without power.

A man was killed by a flying gas bottle in Sydney's The Rocks last night during the storms.

Police are investigating the circumstances.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said it received 906 calls overnight and Endeavour Energy said it was working on restoring power to 16,000 customers.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for a large part of NSW last night, including Sydney's metropolitan area, Wollongong and Orange.

Jetstar industrial action

As dozens of Jetstar domestic flights are cancelled today because of an industrial dispute, unions say almost 80 per cent of the airline's workers have been injured at work, with some claiming to have suffered "near-death" incidents.

Jetstar has cancelled a total of 48 flights today which it says is necessary to minimise disruptions due to a 24-hour strike by workers.

Michael Kaine from the Transport Workers Union said frontline workers had detailed unsafe working conditions, including understaffing and broken equipment.

"One worker states that he was nearly killed when he was crushed between two baggage containers in the back hold of an A320," he said.

Jetstar has offered refunds to any customers whose flights have been cancelled or has offered to shift flights to alternative days for no extra cost.

Officer charged with domestic violence

A police officer has been charged with domestic-related offences which allegedly occurred between July 2019 and February 2020.

NSW Police said a 28-year-old probationary constable attached to the Central Metropolitan Region was charged with three counts of intentionally choking a person without consent and four counts of common assault.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court next week.

Police said the officer was on leave and his duty status was under review.

Alleged robber spat on police

A man has been charged over the alleged armed robbery of two women in an inner-city park and for assaulting and spitting on police officers.

On Sunday night, two women in a group had their handbag snatched by a man who then smashed a soy sauce bottle and threatened the group before fleeing.

Officers found the man with deep cuts to this face and took him to hospital for surgery, where it was alleged he became aggressive towards officers and spat at them.

The man was then taken to Surry Hills Police Station and it was alleged he spat on a police officer again before he was charged with theft, robbery, assault and damaging property.
