South-east Queensland schools have been closed for today, with kindergartens and childcare centres also asking parents to collect children early.

Parents and carers have shared with the ABC how they are getting through the day with their kids.

Here are some of the best.

Movies and television

TeacherNicky Watson, who lives in Narangba, was sent home from school just after she arrived, and is back home with her daughters Nina, 6, and Edie, 5.

"I was so relieved when they said that's it," she said.

"So happy to be home with the girls."

She said they were planning to stay indoors, not drive anywhere and watch the movie Sing.

Melissa Logansaid: "Kids already watched Ghostbusters now they are dressed up pretending to be Ghostbusters lol."

Lyssa Artemisiatold the ABC "computers and gaming" would be a part of the day too.

Kirsty Hymassaid her and her three children also had the same idea.

"We are planning a movie day, my kids are happy of course they get a day off school," she said.

"I'm self employed so I can shuffle my work to suit my personal needs. It's raining heavy.

"I've emptied our pool twice already as it's filled quickly, the drains seem to be coping pretty well at the moment."

Board games, dolls houses and help from mum and dad

For Middle Park mumTeresa Lim, her three children were more than excited to be at home.

"By 9:00am this morning we played cowboys and had an injury, and then played dollhouses and lost pieces of cutlery in the carpet and my oldest son discovered he had a wobbly tooth," Mrs Lim said.

"Then they decided they wanted to try skateboarding in the rain but that's where I put my foot down."

Mrs Lim, who works from home, said she called in for backup to make sure she got some work done today.

"I've just been saved by my parents who live close by," she said.

"They've taken them over and are currently doing checkers [and] handball."

Another working mumCatherine Theresehas the same idea: "At the moment ABCKids, of course, then a play date with a neighbour's kids. Me: noise cancelling headphones whilst I do work on my home computer."

Angela Cochrane Muelleralso told the ABC that "Colour-in [and] board games" would be a part of their day.

Renee Behan Howellsaid their daywould include "Star Wars, Risk, European Risk, Risk, Original Risk and then if all else fails Settlers of Catan!"

Baking

Peta Whitney'skids in Hervey Bay are baking up a storm while the rain goes over.

"Baking choc chip cookies ... while I work! Multitasking like a boss."

What are the schools doing now?

If children have been dropped off, they are taking care of those still at school.

Goodna's St Francis Xavier Primary principalVeronica Lawsonsaid they had a handful of children who had been dropped off at school.

"About one class of 25. [We] sent the majority of staff home. Some were worried about getting home later because of road closures later in the day. Or had kids at other schools that they had to pick up," she said.

She said those left behind would be kept busy with activity sheets and movies.
