Tropical Cyclone Marcus has weakened to a category one system and was moving across the far north Kimberley on Sunday night.

It is expected to re-intensify once it moves back over the ocean off the north-west Kimberley on Monday morning, and become a severe tropical cyclone.

The system is then forecast to track westwards away from the WA mainland growing as it heads out to sea but it is expected to have no further impact on northern communities.

Heavy rain was expected to develop over the north Kimberley during Sunday and Monday, and a flood watch is current.

Heavy rain over the Top End of the NT has started to ease, however a flood watch remains current for North West Coastal River.

Wind gusts were expected to reach 150 kilometres per hour near the centre of Tropical Cyclone Marcus as it passed over the far north Kimberley during Sunday.

People in or near coastal and island communities from Wyndham to Mitchell Plateau, including Kalumburu and Mitchell Plateau had been urged to remain in shelter.

Residents at or near coastal and island communities from Mitchell Plateau to Cockatoo Island were warned to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone.

People were urged to prepare for cyclonic weather in or near coastal and island communities from Cockatoo Island to Beagle Bay.

The cyclone danger had passed for Wyndham residents, while Kununurra and Derby have both been excluded from the warning zone.
