Southern parts of Australia were treated to a spectacular light show last night.

That was after the Bureau of Meteorology issued an alert for a severe geomagnetic storm.

While it might sound like a bad weather system, it's exactly the notification some photographers want.

The storms are what cause the phenomenon known as the aurora australis (also known as the southern lights), which produce a colourful light show in the sky.

The strength of the storm meant it was visible even on the outskirts of Perth.
