    Radar
    Radar maps show the actual rain that has fallen at a particular time, depicted by coloured dots. The colour of the dots gives an indication as to how heavy the rain is falling.     Satellite
    Satellite maps provide an excellent view of clouds in the sky, and also give an idea of wind speed. By viewing satellite images with synoptic charts (see below) you can see how the pressure systems and fronts are behaving, and the exact cloud cover that moves with them.

    Synoptic
    The most important feature of a Synoptic chart are the fine black lines called isobars. Isobars connect points that share the same air pressure. The distance of the isobars gives a good indication of wind strength, the closer the isobars are together the stronger the winds will be.
    A high pressure system usually brings fine weather, and a low pressure system usually brings unsettled weather with more clouds and a greater chance of rain/storms.
    Fronts occur where two masses of air collide with one another, and usually bring an increase in cloud cover. Warm fronts bring warmer temperatures and sometimes gradual rainfall. Cold fronts bring colder temperatures and usually heavier rain. Occluded fronts form when a cold front overtakes a warm front, and usually brings dryer air. Stationary fronts are characterised by continuous rainy periods that linger for extended periods of time in one area and move in waves. Warm, Cold and Occluded fronts travel in the direction of the arrows, and the numbers next to the black arrows show their speed in knots.

    A low pressure system is expected to deepen over South Australia today. The low
    should deepen further on Saturday and move southeast towards Tasmania with
    winds along the NSW coast becoming strong to gale force.

    Gale warning for New South Wales waters between Port Kembla and Gabo Island
    Winds: Northeasterly and increasing up to 30 knots during the afternoon then
    tending north to northeasterly increasing up to 35 to 45 knots Saturday
    morning. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 5 metres.

    Strong wind warning for New South Wales waters between Cape Byron and Seal Rocks
    Winds: Easterly then tending north to northeasterly 30 knots Saturday
    afternoon. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 4 metres.

    Strong wind warning for New South Wales waters between Seal Rocks and Port
    Kembla
    Winds: Easterly and increasing up to 30 knots during the afternoon then tending
    north to northeasterly Saturday morning. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up

    Weather Situation
    A low pressure system is deepening over South Australia. This low is expected
    to move through western Victoria during Saturday, bringing windy conditions,
    and heavy rainfall over inland parts of New South Wales. The low is expected to
    move to the southern Tasman Sea on Sunday.

    Damaging winds averaging 65 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast
    for Saturday for the South Coast, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains
    forecast districts and parts of the Australian Capital Territory, Illawarra,
    Central Tablelands and South West Slopes forecast districts.
    Alpine Peaks may experience winds averaging 100 km/h with peak gusts around 120
    km/h

    The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
    - Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
    - Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
    - Keep clear of fallen power lines.

    FLOOD WATCH FOR SATURDAY IN THE MACQUARIE, BOGAN, LACHLAN, QUEANBEYAN - MOLONGLO
    AND MURRUMBIDGEE VALLEYS AND UPPER WESTERN NSW

    Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a
    Flood Warning [see note below].

    Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to increase in the west
    today as a low pressure system deepens over South Australia. This low is
    expected to move through western Victoria during Saturday, bringing the
    potential for windy conditions and heavy rainfall over inland parts of New South
    Wales. Forecast rain totals can be seen on the Bureau's Internet site under
    Water and the Land.

    The area is generally wet from recent rain and the following areas have a higher
    than 70% chance of local flooding and minor to moderate main river flooding
    this Saturday:

    1. Macquarie Valley - including Bathurst, Orange, Molong and the Bell River
    2. Bogan Valley
    3. Lachlan Valley - including the Belubula River and Mandagery Creek
    4. Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers
    5. Murrumbidgee Valley - most likely local flooding with a chance of main river
    flooding
    6. Upper Western NSW - local flooding from heavy rain expected in the Bourke -
    Wilcannia - Tibooburra area

    This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams
    must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to
    higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if Minor
    Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for
    which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Across NSW,
    about 70% of Flood Watches are followed by flooding.

    Weather Situation
    A low pressure system continues to develop over South Australia and is expected
    to be centred near Adelaide by this evening. The low will intensify as it moves
    southeastwards across southwestern Victoria during Saturday to be near Tasmania
    Saturday night. The low will then move rapidly away to the southeast on Sunday.

    Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop overnight Friday
    and into Saturday with widespread falls of 30 to 60mm expected across northern
    Victoria and falls reaching 100 to 150mm or higher northeastern ranges.

    The heavy rain is likely to lead to flash flooding in the North Central,
    Northeast and Alpine forecast districts and parts of the Northern Country
    forecast districts.

    The heavy rain should ease to showers on Sunday as the low moves away.

    The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
    - Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
    - Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

    Flood Watch For Greater Melbourne Catchments (Werribee, Maribyrnong, Yarra,
    Dandenong And Bunyip)

    A low pressure system over northern South Australia is expected to be centred
    near Adelaide this evening, then will intensify as it moves southeastwards
    across southwestern Victoria on Saturday to be near Tasmania Saturday night.
    During Saturday widespread rain with heavy falls are forecast, particularly
    about the ranges. Rainfall totals of 15 to 30 mm are forecast with higher
    totals of up to 50 mm possible over the ranges.

    Catchments in the Greater Melbourne area are wet as a result of rainfall over
    the past month. Forecast rainfall combined with wet catchment conditions may
    lead to significant stream rises with the possibility of minor flooding
    developing during Saturday into Sunday. The main areas of concern are the Upper
    Yarra and Werribee catchments.

    The Bureau of Meteorology in conjunction with Melbourne Water are continuing to
    monitor the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings when required.

    In the interests of community safety the SES suggests following precautions:
    * Don't walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
    * Don't allow children to play in floodwater,
    * Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains, and
    * Keep well clear of fallen power lines

    Sheep Graziers in the Northeast forecast district and parts of the North
    Central forecast district are warned that heavy rain, temperatures down to 5
    degrees and winds averaging up to 65 km/h are expected during Friday and
    Saturday. There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these
    severe conditions.

    Sheep Graziers in the Northern Country, Wimmera, Western and Central forecast
    districts are warned that rain, temperatures down to 6 degrees and winds

    Severe Weather Warning
    for destructive winds
    for people in the Alpine Areas, Western, North Central, Northern Country,
    Wimmera, Mallee, Central, West and South Gippsland, East Gippsland and
    Northeast forecast districts.

    Weather Situation
    A low pressure system continues to develop over South Australia and is expected
    to be centred near Adelaide by this evening. The low will intensify as it moves
    southeastwards across southwestern Victoria during Saturday to be near Tasmania
    Saturday night. The low will then move rapidly away to the southeast on Sunday.

    Destructive winds averaging 60 to 75 km/h with widespread peak gusts around 110
    km/h but reaching 130 km/h along the ranges are forecast to develop tonight and
    during Saturday for the Alpine Areas, North Central, Northern Country, Wimmera,
    Mallee, Central, East Gippsland and Northeast forecast districts and the
    elevated parts of the Western and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

    The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
    - People should not park or shelter under trees.
    - Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
    - Keep clear of fallen power lines.
    - For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

    The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EST Friday.

    for the Glenelg and Hopkins Basins.

    The south west catchments are wet as a result of rainfall to date which
    resulted in areas of minor flooding along the Moyne River. Stream rises are
    expected given the forecast rainfall which may lead to areas of minor flooding
    in the Glenelg and Hopknis Basins developing during Saturday.

    The Bureau is monitoring the situation and will issue catchment specific
    warnings if and when required.

    near Adelaide this evening, then will intensify as it moves southeastwards

    a result, widespread rain and heavy falls are expected across the Goulburn and
    Broken catchments Saturday into Sunday. Rainfall totals of 30 to 50 mm are
    forecast with up to 100 mm possible on the ranges.

    The Goulburn and Broken catchments have experienced minor and moderate flooding
    as a result of wet catchment conditions and rainfall to date. Given forecast
    rainfall, renewed stream rises will occur which may lead to minor and moderate
    flooding developing during Saturday. Major flooding is also possible if totals
    in the upper ranges of the forecast result.

    Sheep graziers are advised that statewide rain tomorrow, locally heavy in the

    A ridge over Tasmania will weaken today as a deepening low approaches from the
    northwest, expected to move over the state during tomorrow.

    Strong Wind Warning
    For northern coastal waters, Sandy Cape to St Helens Point, excluding Banks
    Strait
    East to northeast winds 10 to 20 knots increasing to 15 to 25 knots this
    afternoon and evening, locally 30 knots. Seas rising to 2 to locally 3 metres.
    Swells:
    NorthWest: Southwest around 3 metres.
    Central north: Confused to 1 metre.
    Northeast: Southerly around 1 metre.

    FLOOD WATCH ADVICE

    Initial Flood Watch advice for all northern river basins.

    Statement:
    An approaching low will bring moderate to locally heavy rain and thunderstorms
    about the northern half of the state during Saturday, before easing and
    contracting to the west and south during Sunday.

    Widespread totals of 30 to 40 mm are expected, with falls up to 100 mm
    anticipated on the northern slopes of elevated areas, particularly in the
    northeast quarter and along the Western Tiers.

    Most river systems carry strong flows from rainfall over recent weeks. Further
    rain during Saturday is likely to cause high levels of minor flooding by
    Saturday evening.

    Flash flooding late in the morning is probable in some areas, particularly when
    rainfall rates are expected to be at their heaviest.

    Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard in most rivers and streams. Low
    level roads and bridges may be at risk to flooding.

    Weather Outlook:
    Rain extending statewide during Saturday morning, with locally heavy falls and
    possible flash flooding about the north.

    1. FLOOD WARNING :
    Rainfall has exceeded 30 mm in the last 6 hours in the Onkaparinga Catchment.
    River levels are currently rising. River levels between Woodside and Verdun are
    forecast to exceed the minor flood level. The river is expected to reach a
    height of 4.0 metres at 6:00 pm. Further rain is forecast and there is a
    possibility that the level will exceed this height.

    People are advised to keep away from floodwaters.
    Motorists are advised to avoid low level road crossings.

    The situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings may be issued.

    SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
    for FLASH FLOODING, DAMAGING WIND and LARGE HAILSTONES
    For people in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke
    Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Northwest Pastoral,
    Northeast Pastoral and parts of the West Coast and Lower Eyre Peninsula
    districts.

    Issued at 1:05 pm Friday, 3 September 2010.

    Rain and thunderstorms are affecting the warning area and are likely to produce
    very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging wind gusts. There is also the
    possibility of large hailstones. Locations which may be affected include
    Adelaide, Whyalla, Cleve, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Kadina, Roxby Downs and
    Leigh Creek.

    There have many a number of reports of heavy rain and localised flash flooding;
    including at Kimba and Wallaroo. Falls of 25-30 mm have occurred in the northern
    suburbs of Adelaide and around Gawler and there are further thunderstorms
    approaching.

    The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
    * Secure or put away loose items around your property.
    * Move cars under cover or away from trees.
    * Keep clear of fallen power lines.
    * Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
    * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
    * Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.

    The next warning is due to be issued by 4:05 pm.

    If severe thunderstorms develop in the Adelaide Region, a more detailed Severe
    Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.

    Synoptic Situation:
    A deep low is expected to develop in the far northwest of the State today and
    move southeast to be over the far southeast of the State Saturday morning. An
    associated trough of low pressure will move through the Northeast Pastoral
    during today and on Saturday morning.

    Rainfall:
    Forecast: Areas of rain with scattered thunderstorms with some heavy falls are
    occurring over the Northeast Pastoral and Flinders today, will contract east and
    clear during Saturday. Falls of 20-40 mm with some heavy falls of 40-80 mm are
    expected in this period.

    Areas of rain with thunderstorms are forecast over Mid North and Mount Lofty
    Ranges today and early Saturday morning with scattered showers to follow. Falls
    of 40-80 mm are possible in this period.

    Flood Risk:
    There is potential for flooding in the Northeast Pastoral, Flinders, Mid North
    and Mount Lofty Ranges today and on Saturday. People should monitor the latest
    weather forecasts and warnings.

    a high pressure ridge extended over waters south of the Bight. A low will deepen
    over inland South Australia on Friday, continuing to strengthen and move south
    over Kangaroo Island on Saturday morning then towards Bass Strait Saturday
    evening. A new high will build southwest of the Bight later Sunday.

    Gale Warning
    For the West Coast south of Elliston, Gulf Waters, South Central Coast, and
    South East Coast
    S/SW winds increasing to 20/30 knots on the West and South Central Coasts during
    Friday afternoon and evening, reaching 25/35 knots on the West Coast south of
    Elliston and the South Central Coast west of Cape Borda late Friday evening.
    NW/W winds increasing to 20/30 knots over Gulf Waters early on Saturday. S/SW
    winds 30/40 knots extending from the west across the South Central Coast, Gulf
    Waters and the South East Coast on Saturday morning and reaching 35/45 knots
    over the South East Coast during the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms. Sea: 2
    to 3 m, rising to 3 to 4.5 m on Saturday. Swell: SW 2 to 3 m on exposed coasts.
