Brisbane felt more like Canberra in the early hours of today, recording its coldest morning since July 2015.

The city got down to 5.9 degrees Celsius at 5.40am, while Brisbane Airport recorded a minimum of 4.3C just after 5.00am.

Canberra was 6.5C about the same time.

Archerfield Airport in Brisbane's south-west recorded a low of 3.9C, while it fell below freezing at Ipswich, west of Brisbane, with Amberley recording -0.4C at 5.45am.

Bureau of Meteorology(BOM) senior forecaster Michael Knepp said it was a chilly morning throughout the state.

"This morning Amberley or Ipswich got down to minus point four at the moment, which is the first negative temperature they've experienced in almost two years," he said.

"It is cold throughout much of the state, we've got a fairly dry air mass in place so temperatures can cool down quite efficiently during the evening.

But Mr Knepp said 2016 was an especially warm year for July.

"In fact, Amberley did not receive a single temperature below zero all of last year," he said.

But don't rug up too much, it's going to be nice sunny day around 26C.

"It's going to be warming up quite nicely today so maximum temperatures will be quite a bit above average throughout most of the state," Mr Knapp said.

"Quite a bit of difference between the morning when we wake up and the morning when it's quite warm.

"Brisbane will be 26 today. Our average at this time of year is around about 22."
