A man has been killed while fishing off the rocks at Merry Beach and two men have been rescued from a capsized boat at Bate Bay as the NSW coast continues to be battered by dangerous surf conditions.

On Saturday night, two men aged 36 and 28 were taken to Sutherland Hospital suffering hypothermia after they were rescued from a capsized boat at Bate Bay, near Cronulla.

The men activated their EPIRB about 9:45pm, sparking a joint rescue effort by NSW Police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Police were told one of the men swam back under the vessel to retrieve the EPIRB after the boat capsized about 6:00pm.

The were found sitting on the overturned boat by an ambulance helicopter approximately 1 nautical mile off Cronulla about 10:30pm, and were taken to a wharf on Tonkin Street where they were treated by paramedics.

Earlier on Saturday, police confirmed an angler died after being swept off the rocks at Merry Beach, Kioloa, on the NSW south coast.

Emergency services were called to the beach shortly after 7:30am following reports a man had been swept off rocks into the ocean.

Officers from Shoalhaven Local Area Command, with the assistance of Westpac Life Rescue Helicopter, located a man face-down in the water.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
