South-east Queensland's above-average winter temperatures are set to plummet as a cold snap hits the region on Friday, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says.

A rain band will cross the south-east on Thursday night, followed by a cool air mass that will see minimum temperatures dip below 0 degrees Celsius in some places on the weekend.

Ipswich, west of Brisbane, could drop to as low as 4C and Brisbane may experience a minimum of 8C on Sunday morning.

BOM spokesman James Thompson said places like the Granite Belt in southern Queensland could get to below 0C.

"Even places maybe up near Roma and Dalby," he said.

He said it would be particularly chilly on Sunday morning, with Stanthorpe forecast to experience frost and a low of just -1C.

Mr Thompson said the cooler temperatures were in line with what should be expected at this time of year.

"The temperatures we've had have been a little bit above average, so it might feel like it's going to be quite cold, but it's actually probably closer to the average when those temperatures do drop off," he said.

Brisbane has enjoyed temperatures hovering around the mid-20C since winter began, but that is about to change with maximums of between 20C and 21C forecast for the next few days.
