Canberra has awoken to its first freezing morning of the year, with temperatures dropping to -1.7 degrees Celsius.

Despite a predicted top of 18C, warmer than recent days, Friday began with temperatures in the city creeping into negative territory.

Between 4:30am and 6:00am, temperatures captured at the Canberra Airport station hovered about -0.4, before dropping to -1.7C at 6:30am.

That was enough for the Bureau of Meteorology to predict light frost on lawns.

The city's south was only slightly warmer, with a minimum of 0C recorded in Tuggeranong at 7:00am.

"It's the coldest April start to the day since 2013," BOM forecaster Tony Nguyen said.

"That's due to the very clear skies we've had overnight, combined with the cold front we saw the other day."

Some relief from the cold is expected, with 19C highs predicted for both Saturday and Sunday.

"We do predict a fine weekend ahead, with mostly sunny conditions," Mr Nguyen said.

While nights will still be chilly, temperatures below 0 are not expected again until at least Thursday.
