More storms are expected following a severe thunderstorm that caused power outages on Darwin's outskirts as well as parts of Palmerston overnight.

Wind gusts of 70-80 kilometres per hour swept across parts of Darwin and Palmerston around 10:00pm on Wednesday night.

The Power and Water Corporation said crews managed to restore power to all areas, including the Palmerston suburbs of Woodroffe, Gray, Mitchell, Bellamack and Rosebery this morning.

Howard Springs was also blacked-out but power was restored before midnight.

More storms expected tonight

The ABC building in the city had the phone system fail during the night following a lightning strike.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Mark Kersemakers said there were a few storms around the Top End overnight and more were expected to come tonight.

"We should see some more, probably later this afternoon or evening, similar to last night perhaps," Mr Kersemakers said.

"We were pretty busy during the evening with a number of severe thunderstorm warnings being issued for the Top End," Mr Kersemakers said.

"[They were] mostly around the north-west, but there were some good-looking storms to the east around Katherine as well."

As well as the strong winds there was 26mm of rain that fell in the city, and 65mm on the Coburg Peninsula.
