The search for a missing Pakistani student lasted about three days. - ABC

Police have located a body, believed to be a Pakistani student missing since the weekend, in waters off Newcastle.

At 7:00pm on Sunday, police were called to Nobbys Beach following reports a wave had knocked two 23-year-old men into the surf.

Bystanders managed to rescue one of them, but the second man could not be located.

Authorities said the beach was closed at the time because of swells of up to five metres hitting the coast.

The body, found 1 kilometre off Newcastle beach about 8:00am today, is yet to be formally identified however police believe it is the missing man.

A relative has flown to the city to identify a body.

The Sydney-based Consul General of Pakistan, Abdul Majid Yousfani, said it was a sad time for the man's family.

"We've flown in a family [member], a relative of the student, from Melbourne. He'll be identifying the body," he said.

Surf lifesavers, and volunteer marine rescue helped police with their search.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
