The Bureau of Meteorology is warning there will be severe weather in the Top End and the southern Northern Territory, with heavy rainfall and flood watches.

Senior forecaster Chris Kent said a tropical low was moving westwards from the Gulf of Carpentaria over the Top End.

"This low's forecast to move across the Top End over the next few days bringing significant rainfall," he said.

"We're looking at rainfall totals of around 50 to 100mm over the Top End, with isolated falls over around 150mm, and this may occur over several days as the low tracks across."

Mr Kent said some areas may receive rainfall of up to 300mm, and there was a flood watch current for north-west coastal rivers and central, eastern, and western inland rivers.

But it is not just the Top End experiencing the wet weather, with heavy rainfall expected in the centre as well.

"We've got a very moist air mass over much of the Territory at the moment," Mr Kent said.

"[On Tuesday] we're expecting a trough to move over much of the southern parts of the Territory."

Mr Kent said it was unusual for tropical moisture to persist in the centre for such a long time, bringing with it a lot more rain than usual.

Trickles of water along the Todd River were recorded by residents in the centre on Monday morning.

BOM said if a slow moving storm passed over the catchment, the usually bone dry river could start flowing again.

Mr Kent said Australia Day would also be damp across the NT.

"We're expecting rainfall across pretty much the whole Territory which should keep the temperatures down a little bit but it might spoil some Australia Day barbeques."
