The Great Northern Highway has been closed between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, as rivers rise across northern Western Australia following a week of steady rain.

Flood plains on GoGo Station near Fitzroy Crossing have swamped the main highway, and with more rain forecast this week, Main Roads WA is advising travellers to potentially reconsider their plans.

Further south, parts of the Marble Bar road are cut and the De Grey River is flowing over its banks.

Annabelle Coppin, from Yarrie Station, said a full river was a beautiful sight, but cattle stations in her region were still after more rain.

"Compared to the river, the country is quite dry," she said.

"The water [in the De Grey River] hasn't come from Yarrie, it's come from further up the catchment.

"It's rising very slowly over the banks and falling slowly, so it's not causing any destruction, and we're just enjoying the river."

Towards the Pilbara coast there have been some bigger rainfall totals.

Manager of Karratha Station and Mt Welcome Station, Dave Rutherford, said they had received 47mm and 72mm respectively.

"It's a really good start. It makes you feel we're having a wet season for the first time in years," Mr Rutherford said.

"This warmer, overcast weather should give us a lot of growth.

"If we can keep getting a little bit of follow-up rain for the wet season, it brings our season forward by months. We've got a real start to the year."
