Perth city has been blanketed in haze. - ABC

A smoke haze across Perth from prescribed burns has prompted an alert from the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

DPaW said it was taking advantage of good weather after a wetter winter and early spring to carry out the burns in the Perth Hills suburb of Mundaring, and in the vicinity of Dwellingup, south of the city.

The total area being burned is 18,000 hectares and a large smoke plume has been generated.

Swan regional manager Stefan de Haan said the prevailing winds would push the smoke over Mandurah, Perth's southern suburbs and the city.

"We expect this smoke to clear overnight," he said.

"The smoke today may affect the visibility on roads and motorists should take care.

"People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances."

The department said if the smoke is particularly thick, it is recommended people shut doors and windows and turn off air conditioners.
