Some flights are set to resume to and from Bali in the wake of a volcanic ash cloud which has wreaked havoc on travel during the Australian school holiday period.

Jetstar said it would put on extra flights to deal with the backlog left by services being cancelled when Mount Rinjani erupted on Lombok yesterday afternoon.

"As it is school holidays our whole network is extremely busy, so it will take us some time to get everyone on their way," a statement from Jetstar said.

It was a single eruption that caused the ash cloud.

In its latest advisory, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said current satellite imagery indicated ash from the volcano had dissipated, and there were no other sources indicating a new or ongoing eruption.

Mount Rinjani erupted last year, also impacting flights.

Tigerair Australia also said flights would resume today, but two would be delayed.

Virgin Australia said it would review its position later this morning.

Jetstar, Virgin and Tiger said passengers were being kept informed via SMS and email.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre is expected to issue another update about 10:30am.
