Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) staff from across the country have begun a fortnight of industrial action following failed negotiations over pay and conditions.

Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) members at the bureau are not responding to media requests or updating the BoM Twitter feed, with the exception of severe weather events.

CPSU deputy secretary Beth Vincent-Pietsch said staff were also taking other measures such as not answering internal calls and emails.

She said the action was taken as a last resort.

"They've had massive restructures in the bureau and so many of these staff have had to relocate, their jobs have changed, there is so much job insecurity as they move to automating the services," she said.

"Our members just want to be able to keep what they've got in terms of pay and conditions, and just have a fair pay rise put on the table and I don't that there is anyone that thinks that isn't a reasonable ask."

The Minister responsible for the Public Service, Michaelia Cash, described the industrial action as "unfortunate".

"The Government wants to see bargaining in the public sector concluded," she said in a statement.

"The CPSU continue to get in the way of public servants receiving pay rises and public sector union leaders have persisted in urging employees to reject proposed agreements.

"Many employees have rebuffed the union's stance; 57 agreements have been voted up with these employees receiving the resulting pay rise."

The union said the bureau's website would not be affected by the industrial action.

Earlier this year, BOM, along with other public service organisations went on strike over failed pay talks.
