A dangerous trough and cold front is approaching south-west Western Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned.

Blasts of westerly cold winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour are expected to reach the south-west corner of the state around midday.

The bureau has issued a severe weather warning and said winds were expected to develop about the South West Capes.

Gusts could reach up to 125 kilometres an hour.

"A vigorous westerly flow may cause localised damaging winds to 100 kilometres an hour that could result in damage to homes and property," the bureau's warning said.

Areas affected include Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown and Albany.

Damaging gusts are expected to reach the South West Capes around 6:00pm on Friday.

Conditions will ease from around midnight, but another cold front is expected to pass through the South West region on Saturday evening.

Higher than normal tides will impact coastal areas from late Saturday and may cause flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

The bureau said this was typical weather for this time of year, but gusty winds could make road conditions hazardous.
