Damaging winds are forecast to affect Victoria overnight as a cold front moves into the Bight.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is warning of damaging north to north-westerly winds around 50-60 kilometres per hour into Wednesday morning, before clearing.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds is current for the Wimmera, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland districts with peak gusts of 90kph forecast.

However in elevated areas, those wind gusts could be as high as 110kph.

Just before 5:00pm on Tuesday the temperature in the city was hovering at 11 degrees Celsius, but the icy winds made it feel like just 5C.

A similar front crossed the state on Monday afternoon, prompting more than 300 calls for help to the State Emergency Service.

Residents urged to tie down loose items

The SES warned Victorians to take care on the roads and prepare their homes and businesses for the wild weather.

"Remember to tie down any loose items around your property like trampolines and garden furniture if it's safe to do so," chief officer of operations Trevor White said.

"Drive to conditions as strong winds can bring down trees and power lines onto the roads, creating dangerous and unexpected hazards."

At Wilsons Promontory, there was a wind gust of 130kph on Monday and at St Kilda one gust was registered at 94kph.

Minor to moderate flood warnings are also current for the Ovens and King Rivers in north-eastern Victoria.

The cold weather is good news for the ski fields with Mount Buller receiving 12 centimetres of snow overnight and more expected today.
