A "fairly active" cold front has caused problems on the road during Melbourne's evening peak hour, as high winds and rain hit the city.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds was in place for the Wimmera, North Central, North East, South West, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Dean Stewart, a senior forecaster with the Bureau of Meteorology, said damaging winds averaging 50-70 kilometres per hour with gusts of up to 100 kph were expected.

It is forecast to remain cold through the early part of the week with more windy weather forecast for Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday.

On the weekend, a football match in Gippsland between Yarram and Traralgon Tyers United had to be abandoned after four players were forced from the field with hypothermia.

The cold and wet weather is also responsible for a 50 per cent drop in production for salad producers in Gippsland.

Adelaide was also expecting more severe weather following weekend gales and heavy rain.
