Mount Wellington got its first winter coat of snow last week. - ABC

The weather bureau is forecasting wind gusts and plenty of snow to fall as temperatures drop in Tasmania tonight.

Wind and flood warnings are in place across the state with a moderate flood warning for the North and South Esk rivers.

More strong winds are also forecast for Saturday, with gales expected on the eastern and southern coasts.

The severe weather warning for parts of the state was downgraded as winds eased after reaching 137kph at Cape Grim and 107kph at Mount Wellington.

Snow could fall to as low 200 metres by Saturday morning and temperatures are not expected to reach double digits in most population centres.

The road to Mt Wellington is already closed and is expected to stay closed until Sunday when clearing work will begin.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Anna Forrest said there could be heavy snowfalls.

"Not so much tonight, but into tomorrow, and that's going to then drop down to around the 200 metres tomorrow morning and then start to pick up to about 600 metres in the evening, so tomorrow's going to be fairly chilly," she said.

TasNetworks said power has been restored to all but about 180 customers, down from 800 who were blacked out on Thursday night as winds brought trees down onto powerlines.
