Voters were rugging up as they went to the polls this morning, with below freezing temperatures recorded around the country.

NSW and Canberra recorded the coldest temperatures.

The temperature in Glen Innes, in the New England region in NSW's north, dropped to a frosty -7.6 degrees Celsius, while Thredbo dropped to -4.3C.

The nation's capital recorded a low of -3.8C.

The cold weather extended into Queensland with Stanthorpe, near the NSW border, recording the state's lowest temperature of -3.3C.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph said there were frosty conditions throughout Queensland's Granite Belt region.

Weatherzone senior meteorologist Jacob Cronje said a combination of a high pressure system and clear skies was causing the chilly morning conditions around the country.

"This high pressure system is situated over much of the interior of the country," he said.

"It's bringing weaker winds at these critical times near sunrise under clear skies."

He said high pressure systems were not unusual in winter, but that at least eastern parts of Victoria and NSW could expect some relief next week.

"We should see a trough moving through early next week that's going to bring rainfall," he said.

"[It won't change] the daytime temperature, but it could help to raise the minimum temperatures slightly due to cloud cover."

Cold conditions are expected to continue tomorrow.
