Victoria is in the grip of a cold snap, with snow falling across the state and Melbourne bracing for a wintry weekend.

Grampians local Will Flamsteed recorded 2.5 centimetres of snow on Friday morning and expected more to come, while there was also dusting in the Otways.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said there could be snow as low as 500 metres, with snow flurries recorded at Kyneton, Daylesford and Ballarat.

There was some light snow falls at Mount Macedon, a popular spot for day-trippers, with locals warning visitors to take caution on the roads.

"While it's just the lightest dusting, like icing sugar on a cake, it's a very beautiful sight indeed!" the Mt Macedon Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote on Facebook.

"It is very wet, icy and boggy up on Mount Macedon at the moment so if you're planning on popping up to the top to check out the snow, please drive with great caution - in conditions such as these accidents can happen easily."

In an unusual sight, the site of the Falls Music Festival, near Lorne - more know for its heat waves over the New Year period - was turned into a "winter wonderland".

Tammy Schoo from Parks Victoria said it only snowed once or twice a year, creating "a bit of excitement for rangers and locals".

Temperatures in Melbourne reached just over 10 degrees after 1:00pm.

Earlier, Ted Williams from the BoM said if the weather had not broken the 10 degree mark, it would have been the coldest June day since 1998.

"We're moving into winter, so it's a blast of icy weather for us," he said.

"Snow in the Otways, or down to 500 metres, the Dandenongs [happens] maybe one or two times a year."

The BoM said more snow was expected to fall in the Dandenongs on Friday night.

A cold weekend is expected for the metropolitan area with a top of 13 degrees predicted for Saturday and 12 degrees on Sunday.

Heavy snow falls a boost for school holidays

Barry Healey, a farmer from Barongarook, south of Colac, said heavy sleet resembling snow had covered the region.

"We haven't copped a heap of rain but it [sleet] has been pouring down all morning," he said.

"It's not snow, but I reckon it's close to it."

Hailstorms were experienced across Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland shortly after 8:00am.

The cold weather is good news for Victoria's snow fields, with heavy overnight falls a good boost ahead of school holidays next week.

More than 25cm fell at Falls Creek, with temperatures dropping to -5 degrees, with more expected across the day.

There was at least 10cm at Mt Buller, with the average snow depth now at 32cms.

Heavy rain and strong winds also moved across the state on Thursday night, causing flash flooding and some damage across the metropolitan area.
