Perth's early birds have been treated to a natural light show as forecast storms created cloud conditions for a spectacular sunrise on Monday.

The colours also appeared to endorse the biblical proverb: "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight; Red sky at morning, shepherd take warning."

Snappers from Mandurah in the south to Mindarie in the north shared their images with 720 ABC Perth as the sun rose.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Monday evening and the early hours of Tuesday for Perth and the south-west.

A strong cold front is forecast to bring widespread damaging winds up to 100 kilometres per hour, dangerous surf conditions, heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised residents to secure loose objects on their properties and have an emergency kit ready.

More advice on preparing for a storm is available at ABC Emergency.

The coming cold front follows a severe storm that hit in the early hours of Saturday.

The State Emergency Service received 580 calls for help over the weekend to deal with water damage and fallen trees and 60,000 homes lost power.
