Hundreds of ferry passengers in South Australia are preparing to travel on an altered schedule as services between Kangaroo Island and the mainland resume.

The Kangaroo Island ferry was suspended on Tuesday because of bad weather.

Ferry company Sealink said it was a "rare disruption" but both locals and tourists had been affected.

"Given the number of services we do a year, you know which are in the thousands, the percentage of the days when we have to cancel completely are just absolutely minimal," marketing manager Julie-Anne Briscoe said.

Ms Briscoe said the disruption highlighted the need for customers to consider travel insurance.

"It's unfortunate, you know we can't predict always what the weather is going to be like, so we do advise people to take travel insurance," she said.

"Many people do, obviously when they are travelling around the world, and most of the people we find do just move to other services."
