Ferry services to South Australia's Kangaroo Island have been cancelled for the rest of the day and SES volunteers have been kept busy due to severe weather conditions across the state.

Hundreds of ferry passengers have been affected by SeaLink's decision to stop services to Kangaroo Island, but scheduled services are expected to resume tomorrow.

SeaLink's Julie-Anne Briscoe said conditions on the water were simply too dangerous for the ferries to operate.

"Unfortunately the weather conditions haven't improved, and not enough for us to sort of safely operate," she said.

"So safety is obviously our number one priority, so we have chosen to cancel services for this afternoon and this evening."

Ms Briscoe said where possible passengers were being re-booked to travel in the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Mount Lofty Ranges, the Lower South East and parts of the Murraylands and Upper South East districts.

Wind gusts are tipped to be in excess of 90 kilometres per hour within the warning area.

Cape Jaffa on the Limestone Coast recorded a wind gust of 87kph at 9:15am.

Meanwhile, the SES has been called out to about 30 jobs since midnight as a result of the windy conditions to hit the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula.

Most of the jobs involved trees falling across driveways and roads.
