Queensland's first cyclone of the season poses no immediate threat to the coast but may whip up dangerous swells for south-east beaches early next week, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says.

Tropical Cyclone Tatiana, which was 1,000 kilometres east north-east of Mackay early this morning, was upgraded from a category one to a category two system about 10:00am today.

It has sustained winds near the centre of 95 kilometres per hour with wind gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour.

It is moving east south-east at 8 kilometres per hour.

BoM senior forecaster Rick Threlfall said Tatiana posed no immediate threat to the Queensland coast.

"There is a slight chance it'll move a little bit closer to the Queensland coast around about Monday ... but at this stage the main threat would be an increase in easterly swells particularly late Sunday into Monday on beaches south of Fraser Island," he said.

"We'll quite likely see swells pick up from that system and they will be from the east and that does tend to be quite a dangerous direction for our beaches, it increases the chances of rips and that kind of thing.

"That'll be the main threat as we get towards Sunday and into Monday."

Mr Threlfall said there was no other weather system looking "too threatening" for Queensland in the coming week.
