It may officially be summer, but it felt a lot like winter across Victoria as temperatures dropped and light snow settling in the Alps.

Overnight temperatures were 4 to 7 degrees Celsius below average as a low pressure trough moved across the state.

A light dusting of snow was reported at Gelantipy, near the Snowy River National Park, and there were some flurries in the Victorian Alps.

Nigel Hodge, a farmer from Gelantipy, said there was just a dusting of snow near his farm but at a nearby mountain, it was a different story.

"I was out there probably a half an hour ago and there's quite a bit of snow on it. It's quite white," he told 774 ABC Melbourne.

"The last snow I can remember is about 1955, '56. It doesn't happen very often you know."

There was also a dusting of snow at Falls Creek, where the overnight low fell to minus 2.3C.

Overnight temperatures fell to minus 2.8C at Mount Buller and minus 2.8C at Mount Hotham

It was also a cold start to the day around Melbourne.

The temperature fell to 6.8C at Melbourne Airport and 2.3C at Coldstream.

It was also cold in the Wimmera, with overnight lows falling to 2.2C in Edenhope.

However, summer will make a welcome return on the weekend with temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s forecast.
